We all know smartphones can be prohibitively expensive at full price. Even at a discount, a new device can end up being a large out of pocket expense. Thanks to one Indian handset manufacturer, this may be a thing of the past for mobile phone users in India.
Indian handset producer Ringing Bell has announced that it will launch the country’s (and possibly the world’s) cheapest smartphone. Priced under Rs 500 or about $7, the Freedom 251 mobile phone is slated to be the most affordable 3G phone on the market.
With over 200 million smartphone users in India alone, the new device is set to have a huge impact on the country’s growing mobile phone industry. Ringing Bells hopes the implementation of the new phone will help connect Indians and enrich their lives by offering a device that’s affordable to everyone from low-income residents to students seeking affordable technology to help with their studies.
While the device will not be immediately available globally, it will be interesting to see how well the phone does and whether or not Ringing Bell will successfully be able to mass produce the Freedom 251. Still, providing an affordable alternative to those who cannot afford top of the line technology is a great step towards connecting a diverse country with one of the largest populations in the world.
